How
Kids and Parents Can Help
Create a Humane Community |
|
Children
and families can do many things
to help animals in their own
neighborhood and at the Monadnock Humane Society. Following
are some suggestions for fun projects for adults and kids, but
don't stop there -- use your imagination to come up
with even
more opportunities to create a
more humane community!
|
|
|
- Be
Active:
Turn off your TV, Sega, Playstation, or computer and play with
your pet.
- Do
a Drive:
Hold a blanket, litter, treat, or toy drive in your neighborhood
for the animals at the Monadnock Humane Society.
- Collect
Canisters:
Ask local business owners to let you set up a money collection
canister in their store. Decorate and label canisters or boxes
with animals and Monadnock Humane Society's name and place them
in the stores, then collect the money regularly and send it to
MHS.
- Crusade
for Cats:
Sell cat identification tags in your neighborhood to help return
cats to their homes quickly and safely (only 5% of lost cats in
the Monadnock Region are reunited with their owners because most
have no identification tags).
- Speak
Out:
Write letters to your local newspaper or magazines that you read,
about the importance of animal protection, responsible pet ownership,
or other animal issues you feel strongly about.
- Make
Posters: Volunteers can create colorful posters on a variety
of themes, from "Make your House a Home", "A Home
for the Holidays" and "Spay and Neuter Your Pets".
Ask local businesses or your school if you can post them.
- Sell
a Service:
Hold a bake sale, yard sale, toy sale (or any kind of sale), or
run a fun house, talent show, skit, or play and contribute proceeds
to MHS.
- Learn
More:
Join the ASPCA's Animal and Club to receive their bimonthly magazine
for kids and learn more about the exciting world of animals.
- Make
an Informed Choice:
Help friends or family members take care of their pets before
adopting your own.
- Spread
the Word:
Find out about services provided by MHS and be an Animal Ambassador
in your community.
- Prevent
Lost Pets:
Hold a photo session and take pet pictures for neighbors to keep
on file to use on posters in case their pet becomes lost. Also,
make sure all your pets have proper and current identification
tags -- and tell everyone you know to do the same.
- Cook
for a Cause: Have
a party and make homemeade dog or cat treats for your pets or
for the pets at the Monadnock Humane Society.
